British Columbia Minuteman Press Franchisee Inks Second Franchise Deal
A Minuteman Press franchisee has just bought his second print, marketing and promotional services location. Steve Wilms, who already owns a Minuteman franchise in Coquitlam, BC, has just bought another one in New Westminster, BC.
Wilms was in school for graphic design when he decided to start working part-time at a Minuteman Press center. He learned many things from that experience, including how to staff, market and build a business location. Just four years later, he bought that location from its owner, and now he owns a second one in New Westminster.
According to Wilms, Minuteman Press is a full-service print center, with traditional print such as flyers and business cards being the entry point. The business has evolved, and services now include large-format printing, signage, apparel and promo products. Started back in 1979, this print franchise is now a global leader with a solid reputation, strong core values and ongoing support provided to all franchisees such as Wilms.
The two-unit owners said the support from this franchiser is great. Business owners don't have all the skills they need, and it's Minuteman's corporate and local support that helps fill in the gaps. One example of this, Wilms says, is outside sales; the franchiser sends reps in to train his staff. This brand's franchise model also allows for flexibility, which is one of the things that prompted Wilms to buy a second franchise when the opportunity arose.
For his second location, Wilms is bringing in Paddy Carty as manager. Carty is a long-time employee of Wilms from his Coquitlam location, and Wilms said he is lucky to have solid staff, which is a crucial part of scaling a business successfully.
Neil MacLeod, the brand's International Regional VP for Western Canada, is responsible for Wilms' area. He said that Wilms is an outstanding franchisee who really cares about his clients and that he is continuing to provide top-quality service to his clients at both of his locations.
One particular sector Wilms has seen a lot of business in at his locations is real estate. Real estate is an interesting field, and real estate agents still need his products even when the market is on the downswing. He's also committed to being involved in the local community and with supportive organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce.
Wilms credits his success to following the brand's system, and he also believes the three main ways he's successfully grown his business are word of mouth, acquisition of some local print shops, and outside sales.
