Each year, “Profit” magazine and AIR MILES for Business join forces to present Small Business Achievement Awards that highlight the successes of small businesses in Canada. These awards recognize the strength and passion of the Canadian entrepreneur community by placing the spotlight on those reaching new heights.

The contest field is very competitive, as entry is open to all Canadian businesses with less than 51 employees that have earned revenue during the fiscal award year. An independent committee selects up to 10 finalists for each award, with a judging panel of senior leaders and business executives deciding the winner. Past judges include Howard Grosfield, CEO and President of Amex Bank of Canada, and Steve Matyas, President of Staples Canada.

The 2015 Young Entrepreneur of the Year is an accolade reserved for a Canadian entrepreneur who is under the age of 30, has launched, and is running a successful business.

This year’s recipient is Carmelo Marsala, the dynamic and innovative owner and operator of the

SPRAY-NET

franchise. The young entrepreneur has earned industry recognition across the board, as he was also a finalist for Ernst & Young's Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2014 and a 2015 finalist for CQF Quebec's Emerging Franchisor of the Year.

Marsala, who became part of the painting industry in 2006, conceived SPRAY-NET in 2009 to revolutionize the stagnant exterior painting sector. Instead of just using brushes, SPRAY-NET staff applies exterior paint using a spray technique that coats evenly and efficiently but at a fraction of the cost and time of more traditional methods.

Since franchising the model in 2013, SPRAY-NET has grown to include 18 locations and is still growing. The franchise is currently planning further expansion across Canada and into the United States for 2015.

A ceremony was held on Feb. 23, 2015 at the Toronto Board of Trade to announce officially all the winners of this year’s awards. The event ended with a luncheon honoring all 2015 winners.

BetheBoss.ca would like to congratulate Carmelo Marsala and the SPRAY-NET franchise for receiving this award. Mr. Marsala’s innovation and vision has led SPRAY-NET to become a game-changer in the exterior paint industry, and he has rightfully earned this high recognition.
