Pet Valu, founded in 1979 and currently the largest pet specialty franchisor on the North American continent is on the hunt for new franchisees. While some might see Pet Valu's size as a disadvantage, it allows the company to offer franchisees a considerable distribution system and marketing force, unique products and technology specifically designed and improved upon for the business.

New franchisees have the opportunity to meet the company's CEO on their Discovery Day, which is a day dedicated to allow individuals to investigate the franchise opportunity.
Currently, Pet Valu has existing corporate locations available for new franchisees in Southwest Calgary at Southland MacLeod and Strathcona Square, in Northeast Calgary at Horizon and Monterey Squares, in Southeast Calgary at Glenmore Square and in Cochrane at Charlesworth Avenue. The existing locations provide a wealth of opportunities to incoming franchises, including an already established customer base, the ability to review active profit and loss levels and the inheritance of an experienced and knowledgeable staff.
Prospective franchisees who are interested in joining the Pet Valu family are looking at a franchise fee and inventory cost of anywhere from $285,000 to $325,000, depending on the store size and features. Franchisees must have a net worth of at least $250,000, with available cash of $100,000. Pet Valu has established relationships with some Canadian banks to help arrange financing up to 70 percent of the cost required to purchase an existing location or establish a new one.
