Opportunities for women and girls in STEM franchise sectors

On February 11, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Science is one of the STEM career sectors, with the others being technology, engineering and mathematics. All of these areas are becoming more inclusive, with gender diversity increasing innovation and collaboration, driving creative solutions and supporting economic growth.

From a franchise perspective, Canada's rich business tapestry is rife with opportunities for women in STEM sectors. From automotive franchises to accounting and construction, there are meaningful careers available across the country and at different entry price points, making STEM franchises some of the most inclusive available.

Why women should consider STEM franchises

STEM careers are dynamic, engaging and progressive. They are fundamental to our daily lives and therefore have untapped earning potential. To work in a STEM function, you need a balance of strong core competencies and business acumen as well as soft skills such as communication, empathy and understanding.

Women tend to be more empathetic and able to think outside of the box than their male counterparts. This is why they can drive innovations and efficiencies within STEM sectors. Having women in leadership positions in STEM organizations is also important to build public trust, empower young girls, and increase the relevance of a business to 50% of its target demographic.

How to join a STEM franchise

Women who want to join a STEM franchise should assess their skills, experience and availability to determine what sector is best suited to their interests and abilities. They must be honest with themselves about their motivations for joining, the funds they have available, and the time they will invest.

They should consider sectors in which they have relevant or transferable skills or take the time to upskill before applying for a franchisee position. It is a good idea to visit some of the franchises that interest them and discuss their interest with a nominated point of contact with the franchise organization to determine whether they would be a good fit based on shared values and interests.

Once they have selected a suitable franchise opportunity, they will need to work with a franchise attorney to help them handle all of the contractual elements needed for establishing any franchise relationship. They will be guided by their franchisor and will have the opportunity to negotiate and develop their understanding of the enterprise before signing on as a new franchisee and becoming the master of their own destiny.
